Offbeat Magazine Cover Story

TROY SAWYER
“we want to put a trumpet in the hands of as many girls as possible”
Executive Director
Girls Play Trumpets Too is a part of my musical journey while growing up in a special place called New Orleans, the birth place of Jazz, where I was thrusted into a gumbo pot of creativity and heritage. The musical lineage of my family gave birth to my interest to play the violin and the trumpet. The trumpet eventually chose me because I felt that the trumpet represented Cool like Miles Davis, Fire like Freddie Hubbard, Spirituality like Lee Morgan, and Soul like Louis Armstrong. And so I was driven to practice to get better each and every day. I realized that I was growing as a trumpet player but I didn’t realize that my bias towards female trumpet players was growing also. I had never seen or heard a professional female trumpet player at the time. As a result, I thought that girls could not play the trumpet on a high professional level, which was supported by the history that was taught to me about the Germans, who were the creators of brass instruments and that they believed that brass instruments represented power and masculinity.
However, it wasn’t until I met a “girl trumpet player” that could play really well at Loyola University’s Jazz Camp while we were both in high school. She was a nice person and she was one of the best sight readers.
Thereafter, I remembered going to Dillard University to check out a female Jazz trumpeter from Canada while attending Xavier University at New Orleans majoring in performance. She played music from Miles Davis - a great jazz trumpeter. She was phenomenal. That experience destroyed all of those misconceptions and generalizations that I had towards female trumpet players.
Currently, I am a professional trumpet player and music educator. I have inspired a substantial amount of girls to play the trumpet throughout the years of educating the youth in New Orleans. As a result, I am on a mission-along with the girls that rock on trumpet-to change the narrative of female trumpet players by putting trumpets in the hands of as many girls as possible!

#happynewyear #gptt #2024 #femaletrumpetplayer #girlpowerSheila Maurice-Grey @smauricegrey is a London based trumpeter, vocalist and visual artist. Sheila brings her melange of influences from organic grooves infused with 70s jazz and a touch of West African sonic seasoning. These sounds are heavily influenced by her London upbringing.
Central to Sheila’s music, is stimulated by her visual art practice where she aims to question her ‘identity’ as well as what it means ‘to misrepresent vs to be misrepresented.’ Her art provocatively explores the notion of ‘blackness’ and the hyper sexualisation of the black female body throughout history since the early 1800’s. In particular she is interested in the visual history and facts known about ‘Blackface Minstrelsy’ and ‘The Hottentot Venus - Sarah Bartmann.’

Sheila is also bandleader of KOKOROKO and plays with jazz septet Nérija, who were nominated for Jazz Fm Breakthrough Act 2016 and Parliamentary Jazz Newcomer of Year 2017 winner. She has performed with the likes of Solange and Kano, and features on Little Simz’s album Stillness in Wonderland.

#holidayconcert #holidayseason #christmas #gptt #happyholidays #femaltrumpetplayer #christmasbounceClora Bryant was born in 1927 and raised in Denison, Texas, by her father, a day laborer, who supported his family on $7 a week. Like many young people, Bryant discovered the trumpet when her high school started an orchestra and marching band. Bryant always knew that her gender and colour would pose challenges in her desire to be taken seriously as a modern jazz trumpeter. Apart from a period in the house band at Club Alabam on Central Avenue in LA, where she backed Billie Holiday, Bryant, self-proclaimed as a “trumpetiste”, was often seen, sequin-clad, in all-girl combos. It was only in her middle years that she emerged as a regular participant in the best big bands and small groups in LA and beyond.
#clarabryant #femaletrumpetplayer #gptt #girlsplaytrumpetstoo ##girlpower #girlsrock #womenempowerment #trumpetplayersMore than ever, monstrously talented young women are rising through the ranks of jazz instrumentalists, challenging the male-dominated status quo. Tatiana Tate @ttatemusic is at the top of the list of rising stars. This North Long Beach, California-based Trumpeter and Composer has built a resume that would be the envy of artists three times her age. Tatiana began her musical journey as a drummer at age 5 and later moving to Trumpet at age 8. She is an NAACP Act-So Champion. She was Soloist of the Colburn Conservatory of Music Jazz Workshop Band, Soloist of the Arturo Sandoval All-Star Youth Jazz Band, and Tatiana performed at the first Annual Grammy Museum Gala along with Boys 2 Men, Kelly Roland, Smokey Robinson and Michael Bolton.
Girls Play Trumpets Too is happy that you are here to support our mission that you represent every day. You are an inspiration that will inspire girls and women around the globe to play the trumpet and knock down the walls of gender bias🎺
#gptt #femaletrumpetplayer #girlsrock #blackgirlmagic #jazz #bam #womenempowerment #girlsplaytrumpetstooJazz Henry, New Orleans native, got her start at age 12 in a marching band for the Roots of Music program. After tossing the clarinet and picking up her Trumpet, Jazz continued marching for her high school band. Music fever infected more than just Henry’s hometown—she’d often wake up to the sounds of her dad playing. Her father, famous trombonist Corey Henry, along with other New Orleans artists like Trombone Shorty, Derrick Tab, Hot 8 Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, and Glenn Andrews buzzed around Henry’s home. She speaks of their influence in her life, saying, “All those guys are like uncles and family to me who definitely encouraged me to practice, to get better because this music can really take you to anywhere in the world.” Jazz is representing on trumpet in the @originalpinettes brass band from New Orleans🎺

#hiddenfiguresspotlight #gptt #girlsplaytrumpetstoo #femaletrumpetplayer #girlpower #louisarmstrongWe are proud to introduce to the world our own Veronique Dorsey @vlahdell as our Hidden Figures Spotlight for this week🎺
Veronique Dorsey grew up immersed in the second line brass band tradition of New Orleans. “Second lines used to always pass in front of my house,” Dorsey says, referring to the boisterous, feather-decked parades that ripple through the city on a near-weekly basis. But it never crossed her mind that she might someday contribute to the cacophony herself.
Dorsey plays trumpet in the New Orleans brass band, The Original Pinettes. “I was always interested in music because my mom's a musician and my grandfather was a singer. So I was always around music,” Dorsey says. “I just never thought girls could be in brass bands because I never saw it.”
The Original Pinettes are billed as the only all-female second line brass band in a city that overflows with marching bands. The group was founded in 1991 by Jeffery Herbert, then the band director at the all-girls St. Mary’s Academy and a member of the Original Pin Stripe Brass Band. In the decades since, The Original Pinettes have morphed into a multigenerational institution all their own. Though the group has weathered many lineup changes, it has never abandoned its mission to elevate women in New Orleans’ vibrant brass band culture.

#femaletrumperplayer #girlpower #herstoryHidden Figures Spotlight will feature a professional female trumpet player past and present every week to educate and raise awareness of these women's contributions to the world. We are here to make sure that they are no longer hidden figures in the world.
Hailed by the International Trumpet Guild for her “sweet, singing sound” and “shimmering vibrato”, Dr. Chloe Swindler @chloeswindlermusic is a Boston-based musician, educator, and DEI professional. Her recent work includes performances with Harry Styles at Coachella, Lizzo at the BET Awards, and Vanessa Williams. As a collaborative artist whose work is built on inclusive practices, she is devoted to diversifying curriculum, creating space for community conversations, and inspiring artists to tap into their entrepreneurial potential.

Let’s give it up for Valaida Snow, who is our inspirational model for Girls Play Trumpets Too! Valaida Snow (1904-1956) was an American jazz musician celebrated for her talents as a singer, trumpet player, dancer, and comedian. She gained prominence during the 1920s and 1930s, earning the monikers "Queen of the Trumpet" and "Little Louis" for her exceptional trumpet skills. Despite racial discrimination, Snow toured extensively in the United States and Europe.

Children look to their fathers to lay down the rules and enforce them. They also look to their fathers to provide a feeling of security, both physical and emotional. Children want to make their fathers proud, and an involved father promotes inner growth and strength. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self confidence🎺 #happyfathersday #girlsplaytrumpetstoo #gpt2
